Sundowner handling

Most magazine articles have described the handling of the 19/23/24 as comparable to that of a Bonanza, and decidedly better than that of the competing models in the same class. The Canadian Air Force once used them as primary aerobatic trainers (purchased in the aerobatic configuration). There are many aerobatic models in the fleet. I don't know of any aerobatic Cherokees.

Does anyone know how a Sundowner handles compared to a Cherokee 180 /
Archer? I've been in a Cherokee Challenger partnership and loved the
low wing handling but the cockpit felt a bit cramped and the single
door made entry and exit a "challenge".

If anyone is in the Hampton Roads area and willing to let me share
expenses I'd be grateful to just ride along to get a feel. Responses

I have time in Archers, Sundowners, and in my current Musketeer. I
used to work at the Piper factory in Vero Beach, FL.

Areas where Archer beats Sundowner:

1. You will find the speed performance of the Sundowner to be a bit
(but not much) less than the Archer.
2. The Archer "stall" is practically non-existent. The Sundowner
stalls pretty gently and conventionally, but has a definite break.
3. Lots of aftermarket airframe mods available for the Archer. Hardly
any for the Sundowner.
4. Archer is AFAIK still in production. Factory parts support is
pretty good.
5. Some Archers have air conditioning.
6. Archer has cockpit adjustable rudder trim.

Areas where Archer equals Sundowner:
1. Same engine.
2. Excellent crosswind handling.
3. Stable IFR platforms.
4. Ventilation is equally poor (unless you have an Archer with A/C).
5. Short/soft field handling is equally poor compared to Cessna, etc.

Areas where Sundowner beats Archer:
1. Two doors.
2. Airframe is built better. Parts aren't needed very often.
3. Visibility is tremendous. Maybe the best of all spam cans.
4. Roll rate (though I think Beech is a tad touchier in pitch).
5. Much better interior room.
6. 60 gallons of fuel.
7. Much lower purchase price.
8. Really good support network from other owners (Musketeermail and
BAC).
9. Cabin room and comfort level is vastly superior. I also prefer the
height of the seat above the floor as well as the height of the
control yoke (which is relatively low).
