SkyTec Starter Application

No luck with help on the BAC site. Which starter should I use. The
SkyTec website is confusing to me. I have a 1973 Sundowner with a O-
360A4J engine. The application guide states 149-LS for one model and
149-PM for another model. I remember reading about cowling contact
issues on past posts. Please help.

I prefer the 149LS. However on IO-360 powered planes, Mike Rellihan has
previously posted about a vibration induced failure of the solenoids, and
recommends a different model starter for that one engine.

As a friend of Les Staples, one of the owners of Sky-Tec, I am pleased to
repost the announcement that you can buy a warranty returned overhauled
starter for $250 plus shipping. These carry the same warranty as the new
starters, come with a yellow tag and are hundred(s) of dollars cheaper!

Please note that you will need a 6" extension to allow your current power
cable to reach the shorter starter. Les can sell you one with the starter
for a couple of bucks, or you can have a new cable made up from the
aircraft starter solenoid to the Sky-Tec starter (which is what I do, but
not everyone has the crimper, etc.)

I have the 149-LS on my 0-320 Sport. Ly-Con installed it when they did the
overhaul. The (LS) starter fits nice under the engine where the old starter
was. I had only one clearance issue and that was near the front where the
starter solenoid was rubbing the baffling. I just cut a hole in the baffling
to allow the top screw in the solenoid to come through and covered the area
with white RTV. Looks great and works good.

I just went to the Skytec website, they recommend the 149-NL for my sundowner with the O360-A4K, with the 149-12PM as an alternative.

With the weight and not the cost difference between them really being the main reason for considering the -12PM over the -NL, has anyone installed the -12PM on their aircraft?

Although 1.6 lbs doesn't seem to be alot, off the nose it would alter the W&B in the right direction.

Reading the archives it seems that the -LS was the one most installed vs. the -NL, again does anyone have an opinion on the -12PM vs. the -NL?
