More on oil filters [Archive]

Hello everyone,

A day or so ago, I sent Casper Labs (maker of oil filters) an email asking
if they have a filter that would replace the screen in my plane and add on
an oil filter. I told them that my plane is a 1970, A24, with an IO-360-A2B
engine. Their reply follows:

"Sorry Scott, It will not fit any of the light Beech's with Lycoming
engines. There are not many it will not fit, but you guys (and us) are out
of luck as there is an engine mount tube directly in the way!

I thought I read on BAC and on MM that there is an oil filter set up that
will work. Have I misunderstood and there really is no oil filter set up
that will work other than a remote filter on the fire wall?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Scott,
We have the 76 Sundowner with the standard engine and the standard Lycoming
oil filter adapter works fine. If you want, I'll take a pic and send it to
you to see if it will work with your mount.
We used the same thermo device from the screen adapter.

I just recently installed a Lycoming oil filter adapter on my Musketeer. See below for some correspondence on this subject. I have some photos if they would help you.

I bought the adapter off of ebay from Premium Aircraft Parts, 1109 Quincy, Fort Smith AR. 729017823. Phone (479) 646-0121. email: CBRpilot2@aol.com It is Lycoming part # 77852 made by Donaldson part # 204418-156. It is FFA PMA certified. It was $192.50 + $20 shipping (gasket included). It uses Champion oil filter # CH48110 or CH48110-1 (short version).

David Snodgrass mentioned on MM that he got one from API but only your A&P or FBO can buy from API - wholesale price $156.66. Superior charged him $21.61 for a stud which cost me $5.00.

Colonial Aviation has one for $155.00 (plus shipping & handling) including the gasket, stud and bolts. http://colonialaviation.com/_wsn/page3.html so this is probably your best bet.

Casper Labs http://www.casperlabs.com/casperlabsinc/id3.html has a "No Spill" 90 degree type for $276 (plus $7.50 shipping), however you should check for interference before ordering.

I finally got around to installing the oil filter adapter on my engine last week.

One of the bolts had to be replaced with a stud and nut because of the design of the adapter. The stud was easy to install but it was very difficult to get the nut tightened. Ended up removing the oil cooling lines and the left mag in order to work the wrench to tighten the nut. Other than that everything went well and there were no leaks after run up.

Mechanic charged me 2 hours labour and $5.00 for the stud.

Oil changes should be a breeze from now on.

Attached are two photos showing the current oil screen on my engine and as you can see there is lots of clearance between the screen and the right mag. My only interference may be with one of the defrost hoses where it attaches to the firewall. I may have to use the short filter. Also, I may have to use a stud with a nut in place of one of the existing bolts.

The screen works fine and probably has done so for 35 years, but I figure if I can keep the oil cleaner and protect the engine with a small investment, it is worth it.

I have been looking at the oil filter adapter you put on Bac. I own a 1980 sundowner and it looks like I might have an interference problem with the right mag if I use this adapter. I would like more information on what type of aircraft you mounted it on and the problems. I have pictures of my engine if you would like me to send them to you to see if there would be a problem. Any input would be helpful. It looks the the system that is sold by Colonial Aviation. I currently have a screen.

Here's the two Emails I posted about the oil filter adapter I had
installed on my 1969 Be23 this Winter. The first Email is an overview
and the second one has the pricing.

FIRST EMAIL

I promised an update to everyone considering the change from the screen
to the direct engine mount oil filter adapter. My A&P installed the
adapter last week. I haven't had a chance to fly 6083N since the change.
The main body of the adapter is made by Donaldson and it is the one that
they sell to Lycoming for their adapter (LW-77852, kit #LW-13743). The
engine on my 1969 B23 is a O-360 A2G. According to Bob Steward, Lycoming
gives the same P/N for all the engines except the O-235. Per Donaldson
the part they manufacture and sell to Lycoming, Cessna Parts Dist. And
API is PMA certified.

Here are the parts needed for the oil filter adapter:

API part# 204418-156 (main body made by Donaldson - only your A&P or FBO
can buy the part from API) wholesale price $157.00

Per Bob Steward, the other gaskets and studs (from the parts list below
that I got from Lycoming) are all available through Superior as PMA
parts.

LW-12795 Gasket x 1

5578426 Gasket x 1 (only if you need the vernatherm gasket replaced)

25C-10-P03 Stud x 1 (My A&P said this stud is slightly larger than the
standard stud and was a #!@% to get on - he suggests a regular stud, but
I don't know the part number)

Std-8 Washer x 4

Std-160 Lock Washer x 4

Std-1411 Nut x 1

LW-25-1.00 Bolt x 3 (1/4"-20 USS coarse thread per Bob Steward)

CH-48110 Oil Filter x 1

Shelby Smith had the same API part installed in his Musketeer last year
and he reports, "My engine analysis showed a marked improvement."

I haven't received the bill from my A&P for parts and labor (when I do
I'll pass the information along). Seeing as how Lycoming wants $475.45
for the kit, with the Donaldson adapter being the most expensive part,
I'm assuming I'll save over $200 in parts! A special thanks to Shelby
Smith, his mechanic David, Bob Steward, and all of you that assisted me
in finding the parts and lending advise.

SECOND EMAIL

This should be the final chapter in my story about the direct engine
mount oil filter adapter. I finally got my A&P's invoice. Here's the
breakdown on costs:

Parts:
204418-156 adapter assembly $156.66
25C-10-P03 stud 21.61
Adapter gasket 1.98
Ch48110 oil filter 18.50
Aeroshell 15W50 oil ($4.85 per qt.) 33.95

Labor:
Oil and filter change $ 50.00
Oil filter adapter installation 175.00 (3.5 hours @ $50.00
per hour)

TOTAL $457.70 ($102.45 of this
would occur for just a normal oil change, so net cost was $355.25)

Oil changes will go from every 25 hours with the oil screen to every 50
hours with the oil filter. It will take me about 150 hours of flying to
recover my costs. Please see information from my previous Email (below)
describing all the parts required.
