Prop paints and prep

Group,

I have two white stripes on the end of my metal prop. I would like to
change them to red. Is there anything off the auto shelf in paints
that can be used? Are these epoxy paints. I also would like to shine
up the prop..........is there a way to do that.

Ironic you mention this when you did. My son and I got back from the
beach last night after flying through rain and our prop tips got
stripped. Here's the url for the Hartzell page on prop mx and it

I've used everything from cheap Krylon to epoxies on props and rotor
blades over the years. The epoxies definitely last better, but even
the ones claiming to be just (more expense) for props erode. There
are some strippers that are friendly to aluminum from Home Depot which
work, and some that have to be totally avoided. I seem to have
settled on stripping by wrapping paper towels on the painted tip,
soaking them with MEK, wrapping tightly with aluminum foil and tape,
then doing something else for a couple of hours. I use a plastic
scraper, some more MEK, and scotchbrite to get the last paint residue
off. Alodine. I'll repaint with most any epoxy paint.
