Dear planetom_4tc (note: most of us use real names along with our 'handles')

Dr. Bill knows about Stab Bearings. Good info there.

You asked about donuts:

I did my Donuts last September - lots of pix on Beech Aero Club under

maintenance. WELL worth doing, unless you live on a mirror-smooth ramp and runway!

How long and how much it should take -

LABOR

My guy charged me for 9.5 hrs (and he ALWAYS charges me fewer hrs than he works -

ALWAYS! :-) He also lets me drool over his new BMW bike, but I have to wipe up

after!

PARTS

Donuts (3 sets of 8 @ 642.15 net per set from RAPID 169-380003

JoBolts (4 ea @ 52.93 ea) NAS1669-6L7

Centering Cable - 1 ea @ $689.95 RAPID 169-810000-47 - PRAY yours is in good shape.

Can the work be done with the plane on jacks, or...

No, cause you gotta pull off the gear legs and you don't want to depend on a Jack

- so build Stands - several pix and designs shown on BAC - they are cheap enough

to make - keep 'em handy for the Front Spar attach fitting repairs! Stan built

the stands on his own time and with his own scrap wood!

Does the jack stand plate interfere with the process?

No - you need the Jack Adapters, though - about $100 each. See above about

depending on Jacks to hold up your plane when the gear is off... You have to

weigh down the tail, too.

What is the recommended procedure for holding up the plane?

Stands - beefy ones! With nice carpet! Lottsa bolts and bracing!

So, planetom, after you join BAC, you can find out about Donuts @ special BAC

prices from a PMA outfit - but if you don't join, you won't save several year's

dues on your order!

READ everything in the BAC archives about the nose wheel bearings and bushings -

you may be doing that too!

Hey BSB, I haven't had a single shimmy since I bought
peelable shims from RAPID. That was around 20 hours
back...

Jay's note is a timely reminder. As has been published a number of times (including on BAC), excessive play in the system is what causes almost all shimmy events. The damper just helps keep it from reaching resonance and destruction. Some system designs simply use zero linkage play and high pivot friction, to eliminate a damper altogether. If you keep your nose gear and linkages snug, you are highly unlikely to experience shimmy, even with an out-of-balance tire assembly.
