    [musketeermail] Nose wheel shimmy

    Brian,

Don't forget to check the shims on the collar. I've
seen this twice, and a couple of years ago bought the
shim pack direct from beech for 40$ or so.

    Good luck,
    Dan

    [musketeermail] Nose wheel shimmy

    Brian,

We had noticed nose wheel shimmy on our 1979 Sundowner and investigated it
throughly during annual. We had also noted excessive nose wheel tire wear.
After eliminating the wheel bearings, we found that the knee bushings were
shot and the two large bronze bushings were worn. This was clearly visible
when the nose wheel was off the ground. We learned that there were four
standard sizes for the bronze bushings and that Rapid did not stock all of
them. We were fortunate that our size was in stock (about $500 each) and so
were the knee bushings. The steel cable (part of the nose gear steering
centering) was slightly frayed so it to was replaced. We had to dig a little
deeper in our pockets for this annnual, but it was well worth it!

    Thanks,

    Darrel Brooks
