    IO-346 alternator

I had an engine failure on an IO-346. Can't find anything wrong except for a chewed up thrust washer on the alternator. We found pieces of the washer in the oil. I purchased a "parts engine" and removed the alternator and again found an identical chewed up thrust washer. Any ideas on what's causing this and a fix?

    IO-346 alternator

Bill, most of the Continental engines (and all of the IO346 versions) use a gear-driven alternator. It mounts much like our vacuum pumps. When one lets go, it often puts metal in the crankcase. One of the many aspects of most of the Continental engines that I do not like. Just seems like an unnecessary exposure to expensive problems. If you break a Lycoming alternator belt, it is inconvenient but not very expensive. The Continental starters can (and often do) fail with the same side effects.

I can't answer the question about the washer damage.
