    New Intercom or audio panel?

I want to upgrade my working intercom (presently an older 4 place
Sigtronics unit) to something that will allow my co-pilot wife and
passengers to listen to music in my '76 Sundowner.

The problem is that my avionics man wants me to replace my working KMA
24 audio panel with a newer one that has both intercom and marker
beacons (additional cost about $1000). I understand my KMA 24 is not
state of the art, but it does everything I want it to. I don't
understand why he's so adamant about not installing a newer Sigtronics
(or some other unit) only keeps talking about shielded wiring; but
the intercom people tell me I don't need shielded wiring.

I've spoken to 4 people, and have gotten 5 different stories what do
    I do?

    New Intercom or audio panel?

First, I'd agree with Tony in looking for a new avionics guy if
you're not getting along. For any reason.

However, there is reason to his "madness." With respect to the KMA-
24, there were a number (not all) which really had poor reliability
and I have little doubt that he's been burned by this model before.
If the radio's got a problem, the avionics tech who installs it or
works on it last will get the blame.

As for shielding the wiring, it's also the mark of someone who is
looking to prevent problems and keep a customer from complaining of
headset noise. There are so many power sources behind the panel,
this and wire isolation are his biggest tools to keeping your heaset
sound "clean." The cost addition is negligible, so this is a plus
    for the guy and you.
