    Voltage Fluctuation

A few weeks ago I had my whiskey compass replaced with a
card-type. That's probably irrelevant, except that I generally pay a
lot more attention to things when flying after any maintenance. In
any case, I noticed that the voltage displayed on my Garmin (I put
that information on the main page, because if the plug vibrates out
of the lighter socket, the Garmin will revert to internal batteries
without my knowledge)... In any case, now the voltage is bouncing
around: 14.4, 13.7, 12.9. Just randomly every couple
seconds. Connectors seem tight and secure on the back of the
alternator. Voltage regulator was replaces a couple years ago. Any
tests I can run before I take it up to the A&P to narrow the number
    of alternative causes?
    Thanks!

    Voltage Fluctuation

I replaced the voltage regulator and overvoltage regulator with
a single unit that has both in it, at the same time I installed?a
Plane Power Alternator and I get the same fluctation on my GPS.
I'm not sure what causes it but it didn't do it until I (my A&P)
    replaced the units.

I would check it with a volt meter. At the battery AND at the BUS. The GPS
may be sampling the signal with the ripple on it and hence getting various
readings. Using an ANALOG or GOOD digital voltmeter will smooth those out
    pulses.
