    N1498L, M898, A23, NDH For Sale

After owning and enjoying N1498L since 2001 I have come to a place where I must part with her.

Unfortunately during the recent annual the A&P uncovered damage to two of the cylinders where the exhaust wasn't properly connected during the top overhaul I had done in 2004-2005. The IO-346 only has 550 hours SMOH and 130 or so STOH, but the TCM guys told my A&P that it has been too long since the MOH and my A&P will not top the engine repairing the two cylinders and will only certify it as airworthy following a major OH.

The airplane has great avionics (Narco 12D+ and Terra Nav Comm for dual VOR/GS, DME, ADF, Apollo 604 LORAN) and has been a great flyer, but I can't afford to put over $20K into an engine for her after already dropping another $3K into an unairworthy airplane.

For this reason I am interested in selling N1498L "as is, where is." N1498L is currently located at CEW (Crestview, FL) and is not flyable as it has the exhaust and cowling off.

Give me a call, make me an offer. I think at this point the best that N1498L can be is a donor to other A23s to keep them flying and airworthy for years to come. I am not interested in pulling parts and pieces off and selling it a bit at a time so please don't ask.

If I don't get a reasonable offer for the complete aircraft I am going to donate her to an aircraft salvage dealer and let them piece her out.

Give my cell a call, 661-839-7785.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Unless there is something else not mentioned, find another A&P. The time limit on overhauls is only recommended. Demanding an Overhaul prior to fixing two cylinders is rediculuous.

Get a new A&P, this guy is just trying to rip you off. Manufactures
recommendation are just that, They are NOT mandatory and he knows it. If
he really is that stupid the FAA should pull his ticket.

I agree with the other posters...............I'm an A&P/IA and would never pull this kind of stunt on a customer!!! Find a new mechanic!!! You can fix the cylinders and be on your way or sell it as an airworthy airplane.

The FARs only require that your plane (or engine in this case) have an
annual inspection every 12 calendar months. They don't require that anyone
"certify as airworthy" the engine, prop, or airframe. An annual inspection
has 2 possible outcomes, and the FARs give sample wording for both.

I certify that this (insert appliance: Airframe, Engine or Prop) has been
inspected in accordance with an Annual Inspection and

    A) was found to be in airworthy condition
    B) a signed, dated, list of discrepancies was given the owner.

In either case the annual inspection is done, and the clock starts on the
    NEXT 12 calendar months.

The decision to repair an engine is the owner's, not the mechanic's. I
would not be bullied into an engine OH, if the engine has good compression,
oil consumption and meets the Static RPM requirements of the annual
inspection checklist in the factory maintenance manual.

Your cylinder damage sounds like something that could be repaired by
welding (the exhaust flange is eroded because of exhaust gasket/flange
leakage?), and replacement cylinders may not even be needed.

Even if they are, for Part 91 operators (you and me, flying for pleasure),
the factory OH TBO is only a recommendation, not a requirement.

I would be opposed to dumping large amounts of money into an engine that is
high calendar time, due to the potential for internal corrosion, etc. And
this may be your mechanic's objection. However it is your plane and your
money, so YOU get to decide.

Sadly the market for used planes has tanked as the housing bubble has burst
and the stock market has collapsed. Many people are faced with choosing
between their home and their plane. Others must choose between retirement
    and their plane.

This has seriously depressed the market prices. A lot of people have not
gotten the message and are still advertising at prices that reflect the
2006 valuation. Prices are off 40% and more across all brands. Those
higher "asking prices" are not accurate indicators of the actual selling price.

I've done 2 pre-buys in the last 2 weeks, and in BOTH cases the planes sold
for about half what they would have 2 years ago. HALF! Ouch. I've been
seeing this trend for many months, and with no end in sight for the bottom
of the housing market, and with inflation nipping at our heels due to the
estimated $12.8 Trillion dollars in liquidity injected into the economy in
the last 100 days, I expect it to get worse before it gets better.

Add to that your claims that the engine will have to be pulled and OH, and
you are talking quite literally pocket change as the market value for your
    Musketeer.

I'd suggest you look into pulling the 2 cylinders in question and getting
an engine shop to inspect them. At this point, pricing your plane with
repaired or new cylinders will be MUCH more attractive than trying to sell
it "dead" on the ramp in Florida.

Your mechanic that performed the annual need not sign a statement in the
logs saying that it is "airworthy" after an annual. He signs it stating
that it has had an inspection and he gave you a list of
discrepancies. After the discrepancies are repaired (by anyone, not
necessarily him), and the repairing agency signs off their repairs, then
you are good to go. And not only will you get away from this guy that
doesn't know his job or is hurting for business so badly he is willing to
bleed you dry so he can make his boat payment, but you will either be able
to afford to fly it, or get significantly more when you DO sell it.

I agree with Bob. Your plane is just a little north of me - I am 18 miles
south in Niceville. I am an A&P and Sundowner (C23) owner. I will be
happy to try to assist. Give me a call at work - 334-255-9918 before 4:00
Central time - after 4 it is hit or miss because I am in the hangar.
