    October Mackinac Island Fly-in update

The Mackinac Island airport is closed for runway work until December.

If you plan on attending, you can fly in to St. Ignace (83D) and take the ferry to the island.

    Bob,

Do you have any more info on this fly-in? Do you have a dinner planned for example?

    Thanks
    John

Mark Anderson is hosting the event. Unfortunately, I will not be attending as I will be at BACFest. I will forward your question to Mark and hopefully he can give you more details.

Hi John (and anyone else reading this) --

My wife and I still plan to go to Mackinac Island on Saturday, Oct 1st. I didn't advertise this trip (beyond a few emails to prospective members). There were a couple issues. . . . it conflicts with BAC Fest. It's also true that the airport is closed until mid-December (new runway being paved).

We intend to fly to St. Ignace on Friday evening. Will stay somewhere near the ferry pier so we can cross to the island in the morning. It's my first time there . . . and my wife recently had a ladder accident . . . so we will probably buy a tour package that includes ferry ride and island tour. It won't be good to do a lot of walking. We will spend Saturday night at the Chippewa Hotel, on the harbor. Rooms are a reasonable $99/night. We will fly home Sunday afternoon.

    The weather looks very good.

If you have any interest in going to Mackinac Island this weekend, please call or email and we can discuss plans.

There may be some who are not familiar with Mackinac Island. The island at the northern most point of Michigan is unique in that motorized transportation, aside from airplanes, are not permitted. Ground transportation is by horse and/or buggy, bicycle, or on foot. There is as much beauty as there is history there. There is an old fort that has been largely restored. We stayed in a bed and breakfast, but the rooms Mark mentioned are reasonable. Highlights of the island include the harbor, the Grand Hotel, and the fort. The runway was much higher on one end than the other and I "bounced" when I landed. Felt pretty foolish until a plane came in after me and they bounced too. Must be required procedure on all landings. I hope that they are changing the grade a little when they redo the runway. For those of you who can go, taking the ferry out to the island would be very scenic as well. If you can make it, I suggest you make your plans quick.
