I’m seeing strike finders for sale on Ebay. Can’t remember a discussion on the List of this topic. Does anyone have a strike finder installed on the mouse? Does it work? Any brand recommendations? The recent discussion on IFR flying got me thinking about the strikefinder… I think I’d rather have it than a vector from ATC.

David, I have a Strikefinder in my Sundowner and love it. It’s gives a nice piece of mind when IMC in the summertime. It’s not meant to try and get you through thunderstorms, but does a nice job of showing any convective activity around you. Having onboard wx with Nexrad would be awesome…Wxworks has this but
a little to bulky for the cockpit right now. As far as brands, the only two spherics that I know of are Strikefinder from Insight and Stormscope from L-3.

I fly pretty often in an A36 that has one. I used it a lot this summer when the Southeast had afternoon Thunderstorms just about every day. It always gives me indications that agree with what ATC and the radar-equipped guys are doing. I really like it. However, if the plane didn’t already have one I would not spend $5000 getting one put in. All this new data-link stuff coming along is going to
let you figure out the weather just as well. The guys I know with this NEXRAD/METAR/TAF update stuff on their IPAQ’s are really excited about it.
