How do I replace the Stabilator Tab hinge wire (hinge pin)?

Technical Editor:

Keep in mind that this is a critical airframe part, and its replacement should be supervised by, and requires a log entry countersigned by, a certified technician (A&P or A&P-IA). These instructions are intended as guidance, not as a do-it-yourself project.

Make sure you have at least ten feet of clear work area, to the left of the parked plane, at the Stabilator.

The left side (Pilot’s side) of the Stab Tab will have a counterweight that is retained by screws, rather than rivets. This allows it to be moved out of the way to access the Tab wire.

Run a line of LPS-2 spray lube down the length of the Tab hinge.

Securely grip the end of the old wire with Vise Grips. Tap on the Vise Grips with a small hammer. to work the wire out of the hinge. Sometimes rotating it left and right a bit will help. The further it moves, the easier it will become. Have help to hold the Tab in place when the wire comes out; the Tab is not heavy.

Bevel the insertion end of the new wire with a file, to a blunt point (not a needle point). Coat the wire with LPS-2, and feed it into the hinge. Once you have worked it in a few inches, chuck a low-speed or cordless drill on the far end of the wire. With a helper guiding the wire to help keep it straight, start spinning the wire as you feed it into the hinge. It will usually go all the way in with little pressure, while it is turning. When you have to remove the drill, lightly tap on the end of the wire, using a drift punch if necessary (for clearance), until the pin is fully in place. A short length should protrude from the hinge on both ends.

Secure the counterweight, and add another line of lube down the hinge line. Let it penetrate for a few minutes, then wipe off the excess, top and bottom.

Check for free motion and full travel, USING THE YOKE; DO NOT try to pull the Tab up and down at the Stabilator. Then make the log entry. The entry is to be signed by whoever does the actual work (owner or A&P), and countersigned by an A&P (if a non-A&P did the actual work).
