Your stated reason for not reinstalling the original is a common (and valid) reason for picking an alternative approach.
Take care with the device you choose, as you need one that will allow you to leave out the original, not just supplement it. It might also be worthwhile for you to review their entire line, as they offer additional functionality in some combined units, for very little more money.
