    Starter Problems

my starter on the IO-346 still does not turn the engine over
intermitently. There is no whirling sound or gear grinding. The
battery is fully charged. The present charger seems to be old (black
with a round type casing. Looking inside of it, nothing seems out of
order; no parts loose wires are intact.

    Any suggestions?

I think that I will just order a new starter anyway.

    Starter Problems

    8786M,
Go for a SkyTec starter. Knocks several pounds off which lightens the nose.
I love the one I installed in my Sundowner. I bought a rebuilt and it has
been great. Rather than buying the extension cable, I bought a single length
of cable and lug terminals from Aircraft Spruce and installed the entire
assembly. Did a W&B, log book entry, signed off and she is good to go.
No, I don't have anything to do with the company, just like their product.

    Starter Problems

Take care. Chuz has a C23 with the Lycoming engine; his model is a great
match for the correct SkyTec starter. 8786M reports having an IO346
Continental engine. SkyTec recently announced some lightweight starters for
some models of the IO520; I'm unaware of any for the IO346, and consider it
improbable. There are also different versions of the Continental starter
adapter, some of which can reportedly be ruined if a lightweight starter is
installed, due to resistance to reverse rotation.

8786M also needs much more troubleshooting before just buying a starter.
While reporting hearing "no whirring or grinding noises", no mention was
made of any other sounds when the key is turned to "start". If a solid
"click" is not being heard, there may be no power getting to the starter
solenoid. If the click is being heard, but the starter is not turning, it
may be a bad starter solenoid. A check needs to be made to see whether
power is making it to the starter itself, before assuming that the starter
is bad. This can be risky for the inexperienced; knowledgeable help is
    recommended.

    Starter Problems

When I had my trouble I was warned not to install a
Skytec starter or any of the new lightweight starters
by Niagra Air Parts. A representative of Skytec was
upset by my reporting that on this forum. I am not
sure who is correct but I would not install one of the
products unless the manufacturer of that starter will
put in writing that it will not harm the starter
adapter. The episode was a about three years ago and
the products may not be the same now.

I would rig a way to monitor the voltage at the
starter before I bought a new one. It would probably
be illegal to fly the airplane with the remote voltage
monitor installed but I would think it would be ok for
a test. I think about 9 volts when cranking would be
about right. Also, you could remove the starter and
leave it connected and with help see if the starter
runs. The starter solinoid switch might be the
culprit. It has a big copper washer that connects two
electrodes. The washer is free to rotate so that the
area that makes contact changes from start to start.
If a moon is burned into the washer it will sometimes
make the connection and sometimes not. You will hear
a click and nothing else when the connection is not
made and no voltage will appear at the starter. If
connection is made the engine will turn over normally.
If a bad connection is made it may turn over slower
than normal or the starter may stall.

You need some help from an experienced mechanic with
    this problem, I think.

    Cheers,

    Willis, N8886M

    Starter Problems

Mike is right. I did not realize the difference in the engines - quick to
respond with what I found wooks well for me. If SkyTec makes a starter for
the IO346 AND I was purchasing a starter, I would look into the lightweight
    SkyTec.

    Starter Problems

SkyTec does list a starter for the CONT IO-346 engine. However it
lists for more than a "standard" rebuilt exchange(About $550). I
remember paying under $300 for mine when I had my engine redone in
2003. I seem to recall it was done by a shop in Ohio or Indiana??
