    PowerFlow Exhaust

    Folks, I saw a C 177 ( stiff leg) yesterday with the
Powerflow exhaust system mounted. The sound of this
thing is awesome, the high / medium pitch "clatter"
noise from the engine is gone. It now sounds much
deeper and more " regular" ie more like a automotive
    engine.
The installation looked very good, with a little
collar protruding from the bottom of the cowl around
the echaust, sticking out at least 5 inches .
The ownser stated that the difference was substantial
and he also stated that the sound level inside the a/c
was higher than with the standard exhaust system. That
    was interesting.
Looking at the system, I would assume that , on the
ground the sounds gets blown backwards ie towards the
tail, thus reducing the bounce-back into the cabin
type sound. In the air, I could see that this system
would blow more of the exhaust gasses along the bottom
of the aircraft thus increasing the sound compared
with a system that blows the exhaust gasses at a 90
degree angle away from the aircraft.

    Cheers

I can confirm that it is very noticeable in the plane on a C-177 and on the
    ground outside.

I went for a test flight in a Cardinal that I work on from time to time,
and which had recently had a PF installed. There is a deep exhaust note
that is very different from the factory exhaust. The installation was done
by another mech, but it certainly LOOKS straight forward on the
Cardinal. Some SCAT and the cylinder connections were all it took. The
lower cowl is tricky to get off and on without removing the muffler section
    first.

The owners were pleased with the increased RPM at takeoff, but not sure
that for $3500 plus installation that they got the most bang for the
buck. The fancy ceramic coating they paid an extra $500 for was already
chipping and flaking off in large sections, so they are expecting some sort
    of warranty replacement.

This plane (68 C-177) already has the high compression (160 hp) conversion,
so they have extracted about all the easy performance gain they can get.

If you add a pair of active noise cancelling headsets to the PF install,
then I'm sure the change in noise level would be very acceptable.

The individual exhaust pipes from the cylinders have a slip joint into the
tuned pipe section and have evidence of exhaust leakage. A CO monitor
would be a very important item, so you can know that this exhaust is not
getting through the firewall and into the cabin. I was dismayed to see
that it was not sealed as well as the factory exhaust.
