    GPS Reception

    Group,

I have an IQ3600A Garmin GPS. I usually use it with the remote
antenna that I lay on the glare shield next to the metal bar on the
left side of the winshield. Today I got a piece of velcro and
cleverly attached it to the middle of the glare shield to get a
better look at the sky with the antenna and also so it will stay in
one place on takoff. I started the plane and fired it up to check it
out. Everything was working well, then I turned on my avionics and
the GPS signal went south. As long as my avionics switch was on I
could not get satellites. I moved it back to the left of the
windshield with the avionics on and wala.........all worked fine
again. Are the radios (which are at the center of my panel) causing
this or what? I can tell that even at the corner of the windshield
there is a small bit of interference as the satellite signal is not
quite as strong. Any suggestions...............No smart ass answers
like."leave it where it works". I really want to know if this is a
    typical problem.

    Thanks

    Al

    GPS Reception

You are in my area of specialty.

You have found an area where there are signals that interfere with the GPS
signal. It does not take much!!!
Typically any electronic device with a clock freq of 25MHZ or multiple there
of will cause interference. You have found that by moving the antenna you
get to an area where the interference is tolerable by the gps.

Whem we had our panel GPS installed, we left the old GPS antenna for the VFR
unit on the plane and use it with a handheld if needed. Most GPS antennas
are installed over the rear seats or further rearward.

Not much you can do about your problem other than change make or model of
Avionics.. You can find which one is affecting it by turning them on one at
    a time.
