    Gear Up Landing

    Hi all,

I've only made one gear up landing in my flying
career, and my son in law said it was the best landing
I've ever made. Maybe it was the adrenalin, or knowing
there was not going to be a go around, or having my
son in law and two grandsons on board, but I have to
agree with him. Touchdown was smooth as silk, and
stayed perfectly on the centerline till it stopped.
(braking action was the best I've ever seen.) Now if
only I can figure out how to convince myself that
every landing is a gear up, I could become a really
    good pilot

    Gear Up Landing

The pilot of the King Air really did do a good job and I don't want
to diminish that. However, notice how close he came to the far end
of the runway. There's a reason for the smoothness and the float.
When the wing gets that close to the ground, there's a higher
pressure of air under it. This is one of those few situations that
hanging on the lowest edge of possible airspeed is desirable.

One other observation about gear-up landings is to finish them once
they start. A while back, I looked at the burned-out wreckage of a
Bonanza. Witnesses said that he tried to put the gear down while
over the runway. He was actually riding on the gear doors and when
the prop started ticking the concrete, the gent pushed full power
and left a row of blade hits along the runway. They ended where the
crank broke, just aft of the prop. Without the prop, his cg went
aft, the nose sharply went up and he stalled from what witnesses
    said was 50-100 feet.
