Thread: Headset for Cell phone?

    Headset for Cell phone?

Has anyone found a headset exclusively for a cell phone? One that covers
both ears. The phone is virtually impossible to operate without one due to
the engine noise. I guess I could shut the engine down and make calls but
that might not be a good idea. <G>

I want to use the headset only for a cell phone call then go back to the
    VHF headset for "normal" operations.

    Headset for Cell phone?

The last I heard it was not legal to use a cell phone while airborn because it triggers too many towers. Has that changed?

    Headset for Cell phone?

Sandy, I suspect you'll get a fair bit of good feedback on this. There are
    several solutions, some fairly inexpensive.

I don't know what kind of headsets you have (brand name, and passive or
ANR). If you don't yet have ANR headsets, at least for the pilot, and if
you can possibly afford one, I highly recommend that approach. There are
several models that include a cellphone interface. Lightspeed makes some
very good ones at a reasonable price; especially if they happen to have a
factory refurbished unit available. Don't buy new ones direct from
Lightspeed, though; there are many discounters for new ANR headsets.

The main reason I am mentioning this is that it might make a lot of sense to
put the standalone interface cost of $100-$200 toward a good ANR headset
instead, which already has the interface built in. Among other things, you
get guaranteed headset compatibility and less wiring clutter. Also keep in
mind that there have been some random problems reported between the
standalone cellphone interfaces and various models of ANR headsets (but not
    with passive headsets).

maintenance and operational information at their fingertips. The Lightspeed
link is on the BAC Links page.

    Headset for Cell phone?

It is still technically illegal per the FCC, but not the FAA (depending on
circumstances; up to the pilot). But the "too many towers" issue was a red
herring. If it ever was an issue, it stopped being one many years ago. The
greatest practical constraints are antenna placement and altitude. Our
    planes make a nice cellphone antenna shield for the terrestrial antennas;
and the higher we go, the further we are out of their broadcast patterns.
For all practical purposes, the cellphones (especially digital cellphones)
won't be usable unless you are low and near a populated area.

Keep in mind that I am leaving out a lot of detail on navigation
interference, etc., so please don't take my note as a clearance to merrily
use your cell while in the soup at 1,000' coming down an ILS. If you need
to use it to save your bacon because everything has gone dark and you can't
see outside, something like a Radar-controlled approach over the phone might
save your day (and everything else).

    Headset for Cell phone?

Lightspeed Headsets have a cell phone jack built into the headset. Works
great and I do not have to anything other than place the call
