Sundowner Wheel Pants - PowerFlow Exhaust Systems

OK; here's what's been going down on this. I'll try to list things as
    bullet items in chronological order.

    - A few months back, Robin at PowerFlow called me. He wanted to share some
information to help keep BAC from spinning its wheels, but did not want to
let me share that information with members until they were further along.
They just cannot handle the phone traffic for items still in development.
Robin wanted to let me know that they had purchased a C23 Sundowner as a
project plane, for multiple purposes. It has been placed in the
Experimental Category for development purposes. That's all he wanted to
tell me, and that's all I'm being "allowed" to pass along (I honor my
commitments). It is also the reason why I have not yet pursued anything
with Leading Edge Exhaust on the West Coast. It appears that there is some
level of collaboration now between Leading Edge Systems and PFS (see this
    link): http://www.speedpants.com/

-That was the last I had heard about it, until this past Monday, after we
had all begun celebrating Bill's successful purchase of the eBay project. I
also understand that a PFS project exhaust system was developed on an
earlier Musketeer, I think in 2004, but something went awry. The system was
removed and the owner took back is plane. I can't speculate on the
problems, but I don't think it was related to the exhaust system. Could be
    wrong, though.

    - Monday evening, after seeing some of the notes, Robin contacted me again.
He was apologetic about not having said something sooner, and told me that
PFS is actually well along on a set of wheel pants for the C23 Sundowner. I
gather that they should be flying in the first quarter of 2006. While Robin
didn't mention this, we know that wheel pants for one plane will fit all of
them, as long as they have the Cleveland brakes, as there are no other
differences in the fixed gear legs. Robin didn't mention this either, but
part of the STC will probably require a specific size of tire on both mains
and nose gear. Since the heavier Sierra works fine with the 500x5 tire and
wheel size, I may suggest that to Robin (I'm open to your suggestions).
That should help maximize any gains (however small), as the nose gear is a
primary contributor to gear drag, being right behind the prop. It would
probably look better as well, and reduce the "ruddering effect" that has to
    be overcome.

    - PFS is considering additional developments for the C23, in addition to the
wheel pants. They have discovered what a nice platform they have in the
C23, and really like the plane. Right now the wheel pants are the only
thing they were willing to share, because of our noted direction. I again
filled Robin in on the population of these planes (all variants).

    - PFS will probably buy the eBay parts from Bill Howard, as reimbursement.
As most of you have seen, the parts were not as advertised. There wasn't
anything even close to comprising a kit for Musketeer Wheelpants. In the
photos you may have viewed, there is something along the lines of a Cessna
182 wheelpant modified to fit on the Musketeer. The job was not done
correctly. If you noticed, you will have seen that the broad, blunt face of
the front knuckle pivot pin remains exposed. Unlike the upper gear housing,
the knuckle is a high-drag area. The PFS design shrouds this area within
    the fairing.

    - Using some of the suggestions our members have offered, I'll talk to Robin
Monday about the design. Desired aspects include a split housing, tire air
access, brake inspection access, and tire tread preflight access (more input
    welcome).

    - In exchange for sharing this info (to help prevent wasted effort), Robin
asks that we PLEASE DO NOT CALL PFS ABOUT THIS WORK. They cannot handle the
phone volume related to in-progress development efforts, and cannot share
any speculative information, including projected availability dates. They
promise they will keep us posted through BAC/MML messages.

There have been several other suggestions for the "BAC STC Team" to pursue.
Sounds like we have some excellent maintenance, engineering, and FAA types
who plan to contribute. I won't be running that show, though I will
certainly try to help. I'm hoping that the group can start with something
relatively easy, while we get the paperwork and development act together,
and get the BAC Submitter's name in front of the FAA on good terms. Once
accomplished, we can do an even better job on subsequent more complex
    projects.

Sundowner Wheel Pants - PowerFlow Exhaust Systems

    Boy Howdy!
I knew joining these two groups was a good deal. There's power in numbers.
    Thanks, Mike/
