    External Power Outlet

    I have been trying for several months to find an External Power
    Outlet for my Sundowner. It appears that the lucky ones with an
    outlet may soon have a source for the plug but those without the
    outlet are out of luck. I understand that the original vender for
    these outlets and plugs is out of business. This is now an orphaned
    part. I understand that there is a process where the FAA will
    approve a Substitute Part in these cases. The Piper External Power
    Plug is a real close match for the Beech part. It is also readily
    available and "Cheap". I suggest that this would be a good project
    for the BAC. We have all the experienced people in dealing with the
    FAA that might be able to get a blanket approval to substitute the
    Piper outlet for the Beech. I am sure that in the future this type
    of parts problem will come up often. I purchased Donuts for AEC but
    it would be better if we can find already available parts we can
    directly substitute for unavailable Beech Parts. I would be happy
    to help this effort in any way but to be honest I don't know where
    to start.

    Hi Doug - welcome to the BAC forum.

    I don't think there are any great options. The easiest might be to find a wrecked Mouse and get the parts and have it installed. Another would be to get a Piper style (or other) receptacle and have it field approved by the FAA (aka form 337).

    My plane doesn't have one, and I wanted one, but decided to just buy a good Concorde battery and wire up a battery minder on the inside.

    I sure could have used one this weekend. Ended up pulling my batteries then adding a solar battery tender/minder. All better now!

    It should not be difficult to obtain a Ground Power receptacle from one of the salvage aircraft dealers. I easily obtained one from Lucky at Air Salvage of Dallas. I obtained it to gather all of the material specifications and component dimensions with the thought of producing some of them for interested club members. I don't know if we can get away with it or not.

    Keep in mind that the 24 volt planes need some relays also.

    I found a set on ebay for around $125. I believe you need to search "Aerostart cables".

    One thing to keep in mind with these cables. The Bat needs to be ON in order for the power to get to the battery. My feeling is, I don't want to leave the bat on while I'm not there. Power is running to the other aircraft systems with the avionics switch off. These cables are nothing more then jumper cables. I good battery tender would work as well or better in my opinion.
