Find someone from an engine shop who knows Continental engines i don't know
the lay out of the IO-346 but can you take the accessory case off and have a
look to see what's going on. Some bigger continental starter adapters have
shims that need adjusting and checking before fitting are the alternators
the same.

You say you found pieces from the washer in the oil was it in the sump or
the oil filter.

Don't mess around or try and cut corners or it will start costing real
money.

Something in there is not happy.

Subject: [BAC-Mail] IO-346 alternator

I had an engine failure on an IO-346. Can't find anything wrong except for
a chewed up thrust washer on the alternator. We found pieces of the washer
in the oil. I purchased a "parts engine" and removed the alternator and
again found an identical chewed up thrust washer. Any ideas on what's
causing this and a fix?
