    Alternator

As I plan my March annual I am looking at about the only thing
untouched under the cowl, which is the alternator. I fly a lot of IFR
and the vacum pump will go this year. Does it make sense to have the
brushes or anything done to the alternator? Or should I just wait till
it fails. Also has anyone used the new AEC Doughnuts? It's about
time as they are 34 years old, also how long should it take a good
    mechanic to do a retract.

"Also has anyone used the new AEC Doughnuts?"

I installed the AEC donuts, my landings are 100% softer with my new AEC
donuts than with my 31 year old original equipment. I can't imagine hidden
stress effects on the main landing gear, wing structure and spar after 31
years of landing on the old compressed/hardened donuts. The new AEC donuts
are great. Well worth the investment.

As for installation, if you follow the AEC installation instructions and
other helpful installation hints posted on BAC, installation difficulties
should be held to a minimum. The most important thing is to take 3 to 5
days to pre-heat (90 -120 deg) and pre-compress the donuts the full 1.8"
before installation. Remember to bring the donuts to room temperature and
not decompress the donuts until your ready to install.
