*** The part that the volume control knob is connected to is called a
"potentiometer". They can get dirty. There's an arc of resistance material
with a little metal "feeler" that swings around it. The feeler touches the
resistance material - and a different resistance is produced depending
    on where it is.

Two main bad things can happen

    1. The resistance material gets dirty.
    2. The resistance material can get ground away.

The fix for "dirty" is simple enough: "TV Tuner Cleaner". Sometimes
you can get it in around the shaft without taking anything apart. "Ground
away, is another matter - the potentiometer would have to be replaced.

BTW, the KX170 series are very good radios. I have a KX170B in my
Sundowner - and a GNS430. The 170B is more sensitive.

Do a BAC search on 'MX170B'. Read the FAQ at the top of the findings list,
then use the two links to get additional detail. I have had good luck with
the MX170Bs. And if you do have any problems, their flat-rate repair is
dirt cheap, plus they give you a free loaner with a refundable credit card
deposit. On top of that, if they have any available when you call, they
will sell factory-refurbished units to BAC members at an attractive price.

I'm surprised to hear you are having problems with a MAC conversion. I have
forgotten who it is, but there is a company that bought the rights and spare
parts for the MAC product, and still supports it. You'll have to do some
    Internet surfing to find them.

If the volume control is the only issue, I would not hesitate to try to lube
it. Contact cleaner is the traditional product. It will work if it makes
in into the pot. I recent years I have switched to ACF 50 and Corrosion X.
It won't hurt electronics, and it "creeps better". Even if you don't get a
direct hit, it will probably climb into the pot in a week or two. Cheap to
    try anyway.

    Greetings All,

I was wondering if anyone has purchased or is currently using the
Michel MX170C direct replacement radio for the KX170. My radio volume
control is starting to get very touchy in that if it is moved very much
it often cuts out reception. I play with it a bit and everything comes
back and seems to hold until somebody bumps the knob again. Vibration
doesn't seem to effect it, just when the knob is physically turned. I
have been told (Avionics Shop that did the IFR cert) that getting these
repaired can be quite expensive or even not possible. He also said he
would avoid the Michel radio as well. Is this correct info. She
hasn't cut out during flight yet, but I want to start the research
before it gets worse. (My handy handheld is always at the ready, just
in case) The current price from Chief for the Michel is about $1495.

    Any thoughts?

Current radio is KX170 with MAC conversion

    Thanks in advance
