*** Actually, a spanner CAN be one of those tools. It's also an ordinary
    wrench that turns a bolt.

The word has an interesting history. Once upon a time the state of the
    art
in weaponry was a thing called a "crossbow". To use it, it had to be first
"spanned" or cocked. The tool for spanning a crossbow was called a
    "spanner".

An early firearm called a "wheellock" had to be "spanned" also. It had
a shaft sticking out the side with a square or shaped end, and was spanned
    with a matching spanner.

So when threaded fasteners became popular and a tool was needed to turn
    the word was already there!

    [Fwd: [musketeermail] Tools]

My impression is that "spanner" as a generic term for a wrench seems to be mostly a English (as in British) usage...my experience on the US side of the drink is that a spanner is pretty specific to the tools with the pins and is in fact usually used as an adjective (ie: "spanner wrench"). I didn't learn of spanner as a generic term for wrench until I was in college in Kansas explaining to a floormate from Bristol, UK what "wrenching" on cars meant...

See http://www.krysstal.com/ukandusa.html for a reference that agrees with me...
