M1 thru m554 stab tip info needed

    Hi,

I`m working with Claude Buisson of aero fairings to
produce stab tips for the early serial planes like mine
(M546). One of my original tips was open in the rear
and the other was partially closed. I was wondering if
anyone can confirm which configuration is correct for
these planes. I would prefer to have the new ones
partially closed but don`t want problems with them
    being different from the originals.

    Thanks,
    Pete

M1 thru m554 stab tip info needed

I am virtually certain that all the original tips from Beech were fully
closed, both wing and Stabilator. The problem is that they sold the closure
as a separate replacement part, apart from the tip itself. The closures
also became unavailable before the tips did. To use the Beech replacement,
you had to slit the old closure out of the bad tip, and use ABS cement to
put it in the new one. The result was that some replacement tips were
installed without the closure, either from necessity or ignorance.

One of the 'problems' I have seen with some of the newer fiberglass
replacements is that they are made (and PMA'd) without the aft closure. I
would prefer to have the closure, for a number of reasons. Drag, water
incursion, wasp nests, and bird nests are all good reasons not to leave big
holes in the airfoils. If you buy inexpensive fiberglass tips without the
closure, I would bond them in if I were you. It would be worth asking the
question, for both wingtips and Stab tips, before you order fiberglass
    replacements.
