    Vacation in and around Fl.

If you're looking for a quiet time, my favorite place is Apalachicola, Fla. We stay at the Gibson Inn, a nice 100 year old hotel right down town. The rooms are all done in antiques and it has a pretty good resturaunt and bar (if you like your drinks stiff). There are other nice hotels too. Also, try "Boss Osyters" down on the river and give Loretta a big hug for me. You can rent a car and have a nice time at St. George Island if you want to veg in the sun. Beautiful beaches at the park on the east end. If you like fishing, there are boat rentals. I did drive out to the airport West of town once and I think I remember a car rental agency on the airport road.

Good day I am looking for any place that would be a great place to fly into and spend a day, two or three, in the Florida/ Alabama/ Georgia areas. We enjoy going to the beach and hanging out around the ocean. We also like to go horse back riding.
If anyone knows any good locations of this nature please E-mail me about these locations. I am planning a little get away for myself and sometimes my better half.
This will be our first trip together using our airplane. THANKS,

    Vacation in and around Fl.

    Trae,
I live in Niceville, just across the Bay, north of Destin. Destin is EXPENSIVE tourist trap; airport is over $5.50 per gal 100LL plus landing fee/tie down, etc (waived with purchase of fuel - 10 gal min). Miracle Strip Aviation has the monopoly. They're nice folks but they cater to the big aircraft (corporate and folks like John Travolta, Tom Cruise, etc when they visit - and they do). I don't go there unless I have to.
Let me start in Mississippi and work east. Biloxi and Gulfport are casino towns. They were hard hit by Katrina but have many casinos and hotels back open and eager for business. Land at Gulfport and the casinos will send a car or you can rent a car. LA (lower Alabama) has Dolphin Island with nice hotel, airport, swimming. Rent a car and go to Mobile or fly to Mobile downtown and visit Freedom Park (Battleship and sub with a few aircraft on display (B-52, SR-71, etc) -- USS Alabama is where several movies were filmed - Segal's Under Siege for one. East of there is Pensacola where you can rent a car and go to the Naval Air Museum at NAS Pensacola. That is a GREAT all day trip. Lots of good places to eat on Pensacola Beach and along US 98 - McQuire's Pub for one. (One in Destin on US 98 too). Flights along the beach are fantastic. Right now the water is clear and looks very green in contrast to the sugar white sand beaches (why we are called the Emerald Coast). Continuing east is Destin. There is everything you want there - surf is FLAT right now not that we have real waves but we do surf. Diving is great - several artificial reefs a few miles off shore in approx 100 to 130 ft of water. The Air Armament Museum is at Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach, west of Destin. Continuing east is Panama City. Again, tourist trap area - big Spring Break destination, good night life according to my daughters. Shell Island (another barrier island) is supposed to be a good adventure for finding sea shells - nothing along Destin Beaches - tourists pick them all up, nothing left to enjoy. Further east is Apalachicola. Great location, quiet. Great oysters but this is NOT the time of year - good only for months with "R" in them. All along the coast from Gulfport east to Apalachicola is great fishing, from boat or along the shore. East, across Apalachicola Bay is Crystal River (about 100 mile stretch, direct, so either skirt the coast line or have flotation) where you can swim with the manatees. North, is Tallahassee. Typical capitol city and college town (home of FSU and Florida A&M) Go Noles! (Daughter is a Nole grad - I'm a Volunteer!) Northwest from Tallahassee is Enterprise/Ozark Alabama area with Fort Rucker, Home of Army Aviation. Rucker has a good Army Aviation Museum (no where near the quality of the Naval Aviation Museum).
That pretty well completes my flying area without venturing into central and south Florida or Georgia. You can always feed the Mouse at Orlando (Disney World) and do all the tourist things there - Bush Gardens (Tampa); Universal Studios, Sea World, Disney (Orlando), fly a P-51 at Kissimmee. Go to the most southern point in the US and land at Key West. Southern Georgia has Savannah, the Okefenokee Swamp, Maule Factory at Moultrie. North is Atlanta - everything to do there; major sports, home of Coca Cola, Six Flags theme park or play Sky Warrior at Fulton County Airport (Charlie Brown Field), etc.

Have a great vacation. Hope this helps with your destination. If you come to Destin, email me and I can give you insight on negotiating the Eglin Restricted airspace and corridors. It is easy flying so don't get intimidated by the charts. Maybe we can get together too.
