    dumb question ?

    hello all ,
i am looking at buying my first airplane and am tossing a coin between
a cherokee 140 and a beech sport . i am looking for a good solid two
seater good for 300 or so mile croos countrys and for quick spins
around the patch .. I have read some reviews about the sport and the
leaking around the windshield , vacume pump and landing gear are the
three issues that scare me about the beech sport .. antone have any
thought or input i would appreciate them .
    thanks

I learned to fly in a 140 and now own a Sport. No windshield leaks. The landing gear is very sturdy. Landing the airplane is a breeze althought it took about twenty landings to get really comfortable with it. Don't know about vacuum pump issues. One nice thing about the sport vis-a-vis the 140 is that you can find Sports with two doors. Don't think the 140 had that feature. Also, the Sport offers a larger cabin. I'm 6'1" 210 lbs. and the sport is more than adequate. Piper might be slightly faster but for the 300 mile trips, not a big deal.

    dumb question ?

My Sport has none of those problems and is a comfortable well built
aircraft. The only downside is the 150 HP. Hot summer days with 40 gallons and two
people and it takes a good amount of runway to get airborne. The gear and the
windshield have been trouble free and the two doors in the Sport was a big
    draw for me.

    dumb question ?

Nothing wrong with either a Cherokee 140 (I used to have one)or a
Sport. Either would make a great plane for the mission you described.
A Cherokee 140 will be a hair faster, but the Sport has tons more room
inside and can carry 10 additional gallons of gas if you want it to.
Comparing a Sport and a Cherokee 140 with similar equipment, times,
and condition, the Sport will usually be priced lower. And Sports have
    2 doors. Nice.

The entire Beech 19/23/24 line has similar windshied and landing gear.
Leaking windshields is not a general problem that I have heard of.

The landing gear is very tough and is much more "firm" than the oleo
stuts on a Cherokee. The Beech gear is pretty much maintenance-free
except that it needs a visit from a grease gun occasionally. The
rubber donuts that are the heart of the gear need to be replaced every
few decades. The Cherokee gear, on the other hand, is a bit more
delicate. The oleo struts need to be serviced with oil and high-
pressure air/nitrogen. And when the seals go bad, they need to be
rebuilt. And that can be fairly often.

The failure-prone dry vacuum pumps installed in the Sport are exactly
the same as the ones installed on Cherokees and virtually the entire
general aviation fleet. If this is a concern, you can have a back-up
vacuum system installed or retro-fit with an indestrutable wet pump
    and air/oil seperator.

So, toss that coin. I don't think you can go wrong with either plane.
I think you will like the creature comforts of the Sport better.

    Best regards,

I beg to differ. The rubber donuts are easily overlooked during an
annual and most mechanics wouldn't know what to look for. Changing
these are a major pain for these guys so they sign you off year after
year not realizing when the gear donuts have gone south.

These donuts should be changed about every 6 years. That's the life
expectancy for the similar parts on the Mooney. Ours are no
    different.
