    Fuel thefts and fuel caps

I was amazed to see a pair of Sundowner fuel caps selling on Ebay for $750. I haven't the fortitude to see what Raytheon wants for them. Why steal fuel when the caps are worth more! Yes, Mike, locking caps would be nice.

Sandy, the very first thing I would do is to verify whether the proper signage
has been placed around the field. Tampering with an aircraft is a Federal
offense that carries heavy penalties. If the signage has been placed and the
local police (and any neighbors) have been made aware of the significance, it
might help lead to some tips and arrests. Some of the increased emphasis is due
to the Homeland Security issues surrounding small fields and light aircraft.

I am assuming that you do not have the option of building or occupying a light
hangar? Last year I had to spend $4,000 to enclose my section of a row-type
shade hangar, and install a 3-panel hanging sliding door. Our local county
airport is also in a rural area, with minimal staffing and no significant
surveillance. We have just been fortunate that we haven't experienced any
larceny yet. I suppose your ELT was taken by removal of the aft side access
panels. Were the panels just left off, or were they reinstalled? Would it have
been (or still be) worthwhile to have the local police check them and/or the
fuel caps for fingerprints, in case this was done by local riffraff with a
record? As I said, this is a Federal offense, and perhaps the local police
would be willing to help a bit more if they thought it might help them get some
pain in their side off the street for a while.

Early this year I began negotiations with a company to determine interest in
producing locking fuel caps for our planes. All my note history is on my FL
computer and I'm up in SC. As soon as I can get my FL workstation moved up
    here, I'll resurrect the project.

Does anyone know of any security electronics that could be placed over the caps,
or inside the cabin and wired to the caps, that would auto-dial the owner or
police if the caps are disturbed?

It might also prove worthwhile to contact AOPA and request their advice.

For well over twenty years I have parked my Mouse in an open hangar without
any problems. The last few months a lot my fuel has been stolen. The
airport is in a small town and rural area with only a couple of resident
    aircraft including mine.

Since it is about 60 miles to the nearest fuel supplier it has become a
major headache to carry fuel to her. If it continues it looks like I will
be forced to sell the plane. They got my ELT last time too. I'm even
afraid to get new radios now.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Sandy

Did I miss something here. Locking fuel cap is a nice touch but how
would you lock the sump drains. It'll be a lot easier to drain fuel
from the sumps. Gascolator drain is also an area of concern.

I thought when you rent a hanger or tie dowwn spot from an airport
they are obligated to provide reasonable security. I think airport
should be held accountable for lack of security.
