    Starter Adapter Problem?

Tried to start aircraft. Propo began to turn, turned backwards and
then did not turn at all.

Popped inspection cap on starter and marked a line. Re start and lined
    moved both times.

    Starter feels hot.

Prop does not turn at all but starter sounds strong. All this happened
suddenly without warning. Starter is new from sky Tech.

    Starter Adapter Problem?

When you say "Voltage checked out OK" .. what does that mean ?
Check voltage AT starter when in "START" position. Must be over 10V. If
not, you have battery , connection or solenoid problem.

    Starter Adapter Problem?

Sounds like a probable starter adapter problem. Unfortunately, the fix is not easy. The best source of a rebuild that I know is Niagara Air Parts. You can also get a rebuilt unit from Continental through Avial or other Continental parts distributor.

Changing or inspection requires hanging the engine from a hoist, removing the engine mount bolts, removing the lower right engine mount adapter from the engine then removing the adapter. A half day job for someone fairly familiar and not for the weak of heart.

I have done it five times to my Continental.

    Starter Adapter Problem?

SkyTech makes several starters for our toys.? Make sure you have the proper starter that corresponds with the number of teeth on your engine.? If you have not done so, mark a tooth and count the number around the ring - 147 on mine as I recall.? I love my SkyTech.

    Starter Adapter Problem?

The original poster has an A23 with an IO-346 Continental. Very different
from Lycoming. No teeth and no ring gear.
