AFAIK, Imperial valve is still legal, however, if yours is shot,
perhaps you could donate it to higher ups, so they can take it apart &
have a look, for the benefit of others who may still have it.

I've not seen any pix of an Imperial valve apart & understand that
there is some question if it even uses O-rings.

BTW, finding a Gerdes, I'd say is good fortune indeed. Where'dya find
    it & how much?

    GERDES Fuel Selector Value

The same fittings are supposed to be used with both valves. You can download SI0838-289 from the BAC site. It details the valve replacement. You will need the two spacers that go under the Gerdes valve. Once you have verified that both valves have the same internal fitting style (I seem to recall that they are supposed to be inverted flare fittings), if your existing lines don't have the correct fitting style, you will need to rework them. That is preferred over trying to use adapters. From your description of rings on the lines, it sounds like you may have standard compression fittings rather than the inverted flare fittings. Inverted flare fittings have the threads showing on the outside of the line fitting.

Wonder if your current valve really is the original, or a legal valve. Glad you found a serviceable Gerdes valve. If you haven't done so already, I strongly recommend that you install new o-rings in it, before installing it. If you don't, it is almost certain that the shaft seal will leak from day one. Doesn't matter if it wasn't leaking when removed. Anything exposed to fuel, when allowed to dry out, hardens up.

    Hi Group,
I found the proper Gerdes fuel selector to replace my Imperial Value,
thanks to your help. I have a problem. The fittings on the fuel lines
do not match the GERDES value. It's like the fittings are to long.
    The
aluminum fuel line is sticking out to far (1/4")in front of the
compression ring making it to long. Does anyone one have any
    experance
in this? Do you trim the fuel line down or cut it off just in front
    of
the compression ring to get it to go in far enough into the GERDES
value for the threads to catch? Hope this is clear as mud.
    thank you,
    Keith
