Need help! Have a yoke mounted handheld GPS mounted/hard wired to the system.
Have tried to get a manual to operate the unit with no luck. The model is
Skyblazer by Magellan, if you have one please send the basic steps to operate.

    Thanks!

    GPS

I have one but I am not sure where the instructions are. I have not been able to update the data base in about seven years and have not used it for about three years. I bought an Anywhere Map to replace it, but have not been able to use it either. It is too complicated to use while flying the airplane and the display is so dim that I can't read it without taking my sunglasses off and letting my eyes adjust from the bright outside to the inside of the cockpit which causes me to lose my scan too long. I would suggest that you replace the Magellan with a current GPS that is dedicated to flying, such as the Garmin or possibly the Lowrance.

I am very happy with my Lowrance 2000. I purchased the panel mount (made by
Gizmo I believe) from Air Source One online and panel mounted the unit. It
works great. Additionally, I purchased the AnyWhereMap XM WX system for my PDA
which is an IPAQ 4700 series and yoke mounted this unit. I preferred using my
system because it is Bluetooth capable which means fewer wires floating
around the airplane and also, it is a 4 inch screen. I am very pleased with both.

I checked the Air Gizmos web page. It says that the GPS panel dock (they make them for Lowrance and Garmin handheld GPS) is for experimental aircraft only, and that all certified aircraft (which includes all Beeches) need FAA approval.

Can any of the A&P's tell us what that would consist of?

    regards,

    Paul.

It means a Form 337. Its still a gray area though. The FAA wants to
limit these to field approvals, but the handheld GPS, by its nature is
not permanently attached like a panel mount GPS. So, despite the
AirGizmos mount, the handheld is still temporarily mounted and not
really subject to a field approval. I think that AirGizmos is trying to
stay out of trouble and just going along with the FAA. So, if your
mechanic is willing to make the panel space and rearrange for you, have
him put one in. It helps to have at least some mechanic input, as he
may be able to spot possible problems or interference issues that may
not look bad to you. I've installed a couple for a customer. Made lots
of work rearranging his panels, log entries too, but no need for a field
approval and FAA. Hope this helps.

    Joe
