    Purchase of a 1966 Musketeer

Good day to the musketeer group. My name is Craig, a new member to the
group and would like some advice. I have been offered a 1966
Musketeer, with very basic VFR panel, a 190hp lycomming engine, with
about 3000hrs TT, at a price of about $31250? Is this a semi decent
    price for this aircraft?

Now I know this is probably not the most objective forum to ask this
question, but for all of my flying career I have only flown
cessnas...172's, and 182's. Will I be very dissapointed with this
aircraft or is it still a fun and capable aircraft?

Please give some basic ideas on what to look out for, (problems which
are common on the aircraft etc?) What about maintanance on the plane
is it low, average or high?

Is this a true 4 seater aircraft?

    Please help!

    Purchase of a 1966 Musketeer

First, we all love our Musketeers, Sports, Sundowners and Sierras. They are very nice, roomy and fly well if rigged properly. They can carry four people if you don't fill the 60 gallon tanks and the people don't all weigh over 200 lbs. The useful load is usually around 850 to 900 lbs, but it varies from airplane to airplane. The performance characteristics are more like the 172 than the 182.

I have never heard of a 190 hp Lycoming. The O320 is either 150 or 160 hp, the O360 is 180 hp and the IO360 is 200 hp and some have constant speed props. Some Musketeers have IO346 Continentals which are 165 hp. With all these engines, unfortunately there are no STCs to convert any model from the engine that was factory installed other than converting a 150 hp IO320 to a 160 hp. The value of the airplane varies a lot depending on which engine it actually has.

The difference in value between a recently factory remanned engine and a run out engine can be as much as $20,000 so without knowing what you have, it is not possible to tell if the price is fair. $31250 is somewhere in the ball park. Also, the condition of the airframe, paint and interior is important, so you will need an expert to look at what you have. Internet advice will be worth what you pay for it.

    Good Luck, Willis N8886M

    Purchase of a 1966 Musketeer

Thanks to all who commented on the 1966 musketeer I have been
offered...I'm going to see it this weekend, and will let you know how
    it went.

    Regards

PS: I'm in South Africa, and we really battle to find well priced and
maintained aircraft in this place. If anyone knows of a good second
hand deal on any beechcraft or cessna aircraft please let me know.
Shipping it to us here is no problem, costly maybe, but probably worth
the effort! I'm looking for something in the region of about $20 - $40
    000.

If you decide that you are serious, get a presale inspection. This is
true for any plane, there may be hidden issues and with a good presale
inspection, you might pick up a problem. A really good presale is done
in accordance with the annual inspection checklist. That being said,
these are great planes, I love my 200hp version and it is a 4 place
plane. My long cross countries tend to be 3 people, 45 gallons, and up
to 200 pounds of luggage available.
