    INTERIOR UPHOLSTRY

Does anyone know of a good place to buy leather, vinyl, or cloth for
aircraft interiors? I would like to redo the interior of my sundowner.

Check with the local Automotive upholstery shops. Most all materials
stocked by these places is SAE or Boston Fire Code approved, which is at
least as stringent as the FAA requirements.

And if you are going to not use the plane in commercial service, there is a
strong debate that you don't need to meet the FAR flame resistance
requirements, or at least you don't need to PAY for expensive testing to
    confirm it.

A Bic lighter and a pair of pliers is all that is needed for piece of
mind. Cut a strip of the proposed material and hold it vertically, and
attempt to light it with the butane lighter. Once it is burning or what
ever it seems to do with your best effort, then remove the lighter and see
if it stops flaming. If so, you just passed the test.

Certain materials are naturally flame resistant. Leathers are typically
not flammable (won't sustain combustion) unless they have special surface
treatments or oils applied to them. Ever try to light a cow on fire? <G>

A friend and customer of mine wrote about his interior replacement and it
was published by AvWeb. Here is a link to it in MS Office "Doc" format.

I have seen some really nice interiors done with Airtex interiors. I alo have seen some that did not look so great. I think a lot depends on the skill, or at least interest in doing it right.
