Voltage regulator unable to up-regulate at low rpm with land

    Hi Group,

Last night I pulled back some power setting up for landing. Landing light on, the ammeter went to discharge, voltage down to 10.8 to 11.0. By increasing rpm s I could bring it up some but not nearly to the 14.4 I usually get in cruise flight. Landing light off, no problem with regulation. I tried pitot heat along with landing light and the problem is considerably worsened. The regulator is new (relatively, about two years and 200 hours on it). It's an Electrodelta. My plane is an A23-24, MA326. Anybody have some ideas to assist me in troublshooting this situation? Thanks.

Voltage regulator unable to up-regulate at low rpm with land

Steve, you didn't mention what the voltage actually was, when you felt that regulation was OK. Did it actually get into the 14.2 to 14.3 range? Or at least to 14? If not, I would strongly suspect a weak generator or alternator. Your symptoms are not common for a failed or failing regulator.

You are a BAC member. If you do a search on "voltage regulator" (without the quotes) on BAC, you will find a ton of diagnostic info. It includes information on troubleshooting, alternator testing, alternator conversions, replacement regulators, etc.
