    anybody near ICT

    Hi Tom,
Wonder if by chance you know Joe Beck who has a Stearman and a Bonanza at
Benton. I have an 87 year old uncle living in Manhattan, KS who was a B-25
pilot in WWII. My brother and I had tried to arrange another flight for him
in one, but failed because of maintenance issues. I was bemoaning the fact
that the flight had fallen through when he stated " If I were ever to get
into an airplane again, it would be a Stearman, now that was a real
airplane!). Anyway, I located the Stearman restoration group on the
internet and asked if anyone would be willing, for a price, to take an old
WWII airman up for a ride. Joe responded and we arranged to meet at Benton
where Uncle Roy got about a half hour of stick time in the Stearman and then
enjoyed a delightful barbeque in Joe's hanger afterwards (BTW, inspite all
of our efforts, we couldn't manage to put any fuel in his aircraft). I
haven't seen that much joy in that mans eyes in many years as he was telling
war stories about aviation back then to the attentive audience. Benton is
an absolutely delightful place and one of the most idyllic airports I have
ever flown into. When we departed the next morning, the gas pump key was
available even though the airport was unattended. We fueled up and left a
check on the counter. A great way to do business!
    John

Wichita is an airplane town, but more an airplane *building* town and not a
    *flying* one.

There are no flying clubs in the area except those limited to employees of
the factories--there are Raytheon, Cessna and Boeing Employees Flying Clubs.

Jabara Airport (on the northeast end of town) has a Cessna Pilot Center
with two recent-production 172s for rent, in the $120/hr range. They stay
pretty busy and are usually not available for overnight rentals. The same
airport hosts Sabris, Inc., manager of a variety of rental airplanes from
150s to Cessna 421s and even a C90 King Air. Prices in the C150-C172 and
even their Mooney M20C (the one in which I had engine failure; see
    http://www.ipilot.com/learn/article.aspx?ArticleID=981) range are under
$100/hr. Some of the airplanes are pretty rough.

There's a real nice little residential airpark at Benton, about 15 miles
northeast of Wichita. They rent a VFR C152 for $45/hr, a marginally IFR
    C172 for about $60/hr, and a recently refurbished, well-equipped C182 with
Garmin 430 for $120/hr. My favorite is a nice Citabria at $75/hr.

    What brings you to town?

I have a contract engineering position with Boeing Commercial which
is now ONEX (Mid Western Aircraft Systems)...

I don't know IF I will be eligible for the BEFC. If I can join BEFC,
I'll likely rent their 182s for the Hi-Perf and complex
    endorsements....

But I"d still like to have other options. I really prefer low-wing
aircraft (for the visibility) but I do have some 172 time...

Too bad the Raytheon club is only open to their employees... They
    have Sundowners...

I take it you live here??
