The trip to Nome and Russia sounds a lot better than a trip to Indianapolis
and Muncie, but at least I will get some flight time. I hope they make it
across the strait. A trip to Indiana will be the first long-haul trip since
I bought the Sundowner two years ago. Since then I have stayed within about
400 miles of Tucson. If this upcoming trip goes OK, then we may plan some
other ambitious trips, but maybe not Nome just yet. Today I checked the
battery and swapped the 50-pound lead weight ballast for 30 pounds of
bottled water. With the tool kit, extra oil, and the other supplies I
carry, I should have 75 pounds with luggage. This will balance the plane
with 50 gallons of fuel, and provide for survival in the event of an
off-field landing in the desert. Each leg is planned for about three hours,
which leaves a two-hour reserve. I originally planned it for three 4-hour
legs, but changed to four 3-hour legs because four hours is a long time to
sit without walking around. If anyone is based at (or near) any of these
airports and you want to admire each other's airplanes for a while, contact
me directly and we might be able to arrange it.

Note for the newcomers: Watch your weight and balance, especially the
balance. It is really easy to load with a forward CG at takeoff with 40 to
59 gallons of fuel.

The airports I plan on visiting are:

Santa Rosa NM for lunch on Thursday (June 30)
Ponca City OK overnight with Joplin as an alternate (if there is a major
tailwind)
Lebanon KS for lunch on Friday with Rolla National as a big tailwind alternate
Indianapolis Metro Friday night
Several trips to Muncie over the weekend
Springfield/Branson for a few days around July 5, 6, 7
Norman OK Friday through Monday morning
Either Hobbs NM or Santa Rosa NM again for lunch on Monday July 11

Also, I am interested in good or bad things about Santa Rosa, Ponca City,
Joplin, Lebanon, Rolla National, Springfield/Branson, or Hobbs. I am kind
of stuck at the others.
