What's the best bank and speed to turn loosing least altitud

I've been practicing emergency landings, or at least turns that would
lead to one. At first I only used 15 degrees of bank and tried to
hold 90 mph. It takes so long to get around I lost 1200'+. Then I
tried 30 degrees. It takes me 30+ to 40+ seconds to turn 360 degrees
and I was loosing 500-800'. I think it took me close to 2 minutes to
turn at 15 degrees bank. I guess that's pretty close to the old
standard rate turn. I know if I bank more I'll turn faster but I'll
lose altitude faster too. Also seemed like I was gaining airspeed.
Maybe I should be using more back pressure. Kinda afraid with out the
    engine pumping along.

What works best? Also finally figured out that our interconnected
rudder and aelerons aren't interconnected enough when banked 30
degrees with no power. When I step on the rudder she wants to roll in
    more bank.

So all you CFIs and graybeards, tell me what I should try.

What's the best bank and speed to turn loosing least altitud

    Cloyd,

I have a Barry Schiff video that has several items in it. One is figuring
out what is best for returning around while loosing the least altitude. As
part of the video, he ran some experiments and determined that a steep fast
turn is best. I found the video but don't have time to watch it tonight.
The title is "Proficient Flying, the Very Best of Barry Schiff" (Volume I)
and it is put out by AOPA.
