While it is a longer drive, if you can't find any recent cancellations in Appleton, Green Bay is usually a "sure thing". Most folks find that they have to try all year before finding Oshkosh accommodations.

Since cancellations/reservations occur hourly at this point in time, at all the known hotels (in Appleton and closer), it can required hourly calls to snag something now. Green Bay will probably have plenty of lodging available. If your schedule now permits, for heaven's sake don't miss the opportunity to go, just because of a need to stay further away each night. While personally I much prefer SNF, every birdman should visit Aviation Mecca at least once.

While the fly-in excitement is fun, and a necessity if you plan to camp on the field, Jim's advice is sound for a number of reasons. Paula and I stopped flying into Osh and Sun-N-Fun many years ago. I got fed up with cleaning an eighth-inch of blown-around dirt off the plane prior to departure, and then spending literally months trying to get all the grit out of all the external pivot points and hinges. My bet is that a multi-day fly-in to events like this winds up putting the equivalent of a couple of years of wear and tear on the external un-sealed moving parts. All those planes taxiing around really spreads around a lot of crud, especially when you have to park in the dirt (euphemistically referred to as turf).

On the one hand, it will be tough finding a hotel room at this late
date for the weekend (which is the busiest time of the show). On the
other hand, there are frequently cancellations. I'd avoid Oshkosh and
try Appleton. A quick internet search will yield a bunch of hotels.
I usually stay at Woodfield Suites, which is right next to the
interstate and a quick 20 minutes from the show.

Having flown into OSH twice, I'm also a big fan of never, ever doing
it again. I suppose it's the kind of experience everyone should have
once in their lives but it also gets very ify whether or not the field
will be open to you. Especially on the weekend. And especially if
you're not camping. My vote is Appleton all around.

Hmmm, maybe I should check on the reservation I have at the Super-8?

I came thru Oshkosh in 1991, one month late, after dropping my son off at
Rose-Hullman in Terre Haute. Drove up thru Chicago thinking the Museum might
stay open late enough for a Look-See before I headed west on the old Super-Slab.
Stopped at MEIGS field to use the potty at the Observatory.

The 'listen on 1600 for Museum info' lights caught my attention about 10 miles
south and I heard the bad news - Museum closes at 5PM - guess you know what time
    it was?

So, I convinced my (as Mike R calls them) self-loading baggage that we didn't
want to drive much farther anyway, and that there was a huge outlet mall right
across from the Museum, and couldn't we just check in to the Super-8 and 'I'll
only be in there for an hour in the morning' PLLLEEEEZZZZZ??????

Long Story Short, the desk lady responded to my request for a reservation for the
1992 Expo with this: "We're booked up until 2009."

So, I guess I'm all set in about three years, right?

P.S. - I was first thru the door of the Museum at 9AM and left the Docent in the
dust - I RAN thru all three buildings and made it back to the entrance in only
THREE hours! Good thing I bought the VHS-Tour tape - so I could see at least a
    little of what I missed!
