    Erratic VOR

Hello all you Avionics folks. Got a strange one.

Last weekend was the first time I had a chance to go do some ILS approaches
since my aircraft had been down for so long being painted. So I am being
vectored to the FAF, about one mile from the OM I switch over to the ILS
Freq and the CDI starts swaying back and forth like its looking for the
signal. The closer I get to the airport, the better the CDI starts to track
    and center.

So now I am on my second approach and the same thing happens. This time I
tune the #2 VOR to the same localizer freq as the #1 and both needles are
swinging back in forth in the same rhythm? Approach control said there was
no problems with the VOR as far as they knew. The glideslope was fine.

While painting the aircraft, we had to lift the ant. Up to get some old
paint in the top of the rudder area and everything was put back exactly as
removed. Could something have been messed up when the ant. Was removed? have
any of you ever seen something like this before? And if so what could be
    causing it.

    Erratic VOR

    Jeff,

Although it seems like a real pain, I would replace the coaxial cable from
the VOR antenna on the tail to the splitter behind the instrument panel.
After 30 years the dielectric insulation can turn to dust and the cable may
be internally shorted by bending it. Check the antenna, too. Another
culprit may be the signal splitter itself, but splitters have no moving
    parts and are very reliable.
