On many or most of the planes, the nose gear centering cable is used to provide proper rudder trim, via the nose gear steering spring cartridge link. When you see an external rudder trim tab that is bent off to the side, checking the centering cable often shows why. Ditto for a plane that is taking ten pounds of rudder force to center the ball in cruise. The centering cable can also play a role in stronger crosswind landings; it can help keep the plane from darting sideways when the nose gear comes down, while the rudder is being held off center. These issues can be amplified on the retracts, all of which must have a properly functioning centering cable to be safe.

Not so sure I agree Bill. After having my centering
cable all apart this spring, I think it is prossibly
the most non needed part on the whole plane.
Especially since mine had not actually been working
for who knows how many years.
