What a sad ending to three very young peoples lives. Flying over the great
lakes during summer haze is very difficult for the VFR pilot during daylight
hours, but night over water should be out of bounds for any VFR pilot.

    Hi all -

Not to make light of this sad situation -

But the report mentions "single-engine hybrid Cherokee"

Just wonder what that might be?

If it's anything like my "Hybrid" Ford Escape - no way it could have lifted off
    with 450# of lithium AAA's.

    Uh, OK, read the article.
What is a "hybrid Cherokee" anyway?

Probably what the person on the other end of the phone heard when the
reporter on the scene called in on his/her cell phone and said "Piper
    Cherokee".

Plane debris found in Lake Erie

The pilot was a commercial pilot and CFI - he was flying for a
regional out of Detroit. I don't understand what went wrong. Kevin
    Jesteadt is my cousin's son.
