Short Commentary

It is the policy of Beech Aero Club that that the club does not endorse any particular vendor, service or products. Various members make comments, good, bad and indifferent about many things – products, vendors, people and other things and this website is meant to provide an open forum to share comments and experiences, both good and bad (and we hope mostly good). Regardless those comments are strictly the opinion of the original author or 3rd party as reported by a website participant. Such comments on the BAC website due not constitute an endorsement or criticism of any person, business, product or service by Beech Aero Club, its officers or the website operators.

Like anything involving risk and money we urge members and others to conduct their own diligence and care in selecting a vendor at all times, regardless of such listing here. The current status of any individual certificated by the FAA can be verified at http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/ including A&P and Mechanic Certificates. Information on Repair Stations can be found at http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/repair/. For the mutual benefit of both the customer and the vendor we encourage there to be a clear understanding about prices, terms and other details of the arrangement. Many customer service disputes result from failures in communication, not failures in service or product.

Additional Commentary
By necessity aircraft maintenance can involve large sums of money very quickly. We urge there to be clear communication on the scope of work and the scope and limits of any work authorization. We suggest using tools like written estimates, written authorization dollar limits and scope statements and other tools to avoid surprises and ensure both parties feel fairly treated and/or properly renumerated at the end of work. We also suggest advance agreement and/or disclosure on terms for things like payment timing, timing on logbook returns and other activities.

For large repairs it not unreasonable for a vendor to expect some amount of deposit or pre-payment particularly when expensive parts need to be ordered. The customer should obtain a detailed written disclosure about what is and is not covered by such payment and there should be clear documentation of any options or rules for refunds (or clear disclosure that there is no option for a refund). There have unfortunately been cases of businesses (aviation and otherwise) “going under” or otherwise failing to deliver on such promised prepaid services. So again, due diligence is advised. When in doubt arrive at some mutually acceptable escrow arrangement and/or possibly have the customer obtain major parts in their own name so they have clear title at least to the parts in the event of any questions or issues. Save all receipts and invoices and be sure at “final” payment that there is clear indication of “Paid” or “Paid in Full” status or similar release of any claim or lien on all amounts. Beware of work with multiple invoices – to protect yourself you need payment documentation on every invoice.

Some maintenance activities may involve a test flight. These may include yourself or some may be done by the shop without you present. In all cases be sure any flight has clear resolution for liability and insurance and PIC status prior to the flight. In particular a test flight conducted by an FAA Certified Repair Station is often not covered by the primary aircraft insurance (and watch out for A&P shops that are also repair stations, this can impact your insurance status on test flights). Many repair stations will have you conduct the test flight using non-pilot (or at least non-flying) personnel on the flight to avoid questions about who is conducting the flight. In general once an annual or 100 hour inspection has begun their aircraft is not airworthy and generally not insured for flight until that inspection is signed off on either without deficiencies or with such deficiencies corrected.

Please remember that any flight of a non-airworthy aircraft – due to expired or failed inspection for instance – under any temporary authorization such as a “ferry permit” is almost never covered under your insurance without prior approval in writing. Such approval must come from the actual underwriter, not your agent. Obtaining such approval is usually straightforward but it is critical you have such approval in writing. Additionally there have been several issues with the use of temporary authorizations and confusion under the scope of the authorization over multiple flight legs and/or multiple days (or any time after the original date on the authorization). When in doubt we urge members to contact their actual insurance company to obtain authorization or answer questions about scope of coverage and/or contact the issuing FSDO for clarification on any temporary flight authorization.

As a pilot and/or aircraft owner you will in most cases be responsible by default or if there is any doubt if anything happens. As an aircraft owner or operator you alone are responsible for providing a legally airworthy aircraft. This can be particularly tricky during the conduct of maintenance activities. When in doubt ask – your shop, your FSDO, your insurance company.

They replaced all of my old CAT/CEET with SCEET and did a great job. They also performed an annual, replaced my alternator, and applied ACF50 (they’re an authorized ACF50 center).
